SIWES (Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme)

SIWES is a programme implemented by NBTE for students in universities and polytechnics. This programme is part of the students courses for a particular semester. It helps the student to learn practically and have field experience on what they've learnt while in school. Students in faculty of science and engineering are expected to take part in the programme, this involves computer science and engr, mathematics and statistics, science laboratory technology, civil engr, building tech and quantity survey, agricultural tech and engr and others which may not be listed.

Programme duration for Universities is 6 months while 4 months for Polytechnics.

For the smooth operation of the SIWES, the following guidelines shall apply:

Responsibility for placement of Students

Institutions offering the ND programme shall arrange to place the students in industry. By April 30 of each year, six copies of the master list showing where each student has been placed shall be submitted to the Executive Secretary, NBTE which shall, in turn, authenticate the list and forward it to the industrial Training Fund, Jos.

The Placement officers should discuss and agree with industries on the following:

I. A task inventory of what the students should be expected to experience during the period of attachment. It may be wise to adopt the one already approved for each field.

II. The industry-based supervisor of the students during the period, likewise the institution based supervisor.

III. The evaluation of the student during the period. It should be noted that the final grading of the student during the period of attachment should be weighted more on the evaluation by his industry-based supervisor.

Evaluation of Students during the SIWES In the evaluation of the student, cognizance should be taken of the following items:

  • Punctuality to training sessions
  • Attendance
  • General attitude to work
  • Respect for authority
  • Interest in the field/technical area
  • Technical competence as a potential technician in his field.

The role of HBS in SIWES

HBS provides an array of courses for computer science and engr students for the period of 4months (October - Janurary). The students are expected to go through all packages that will be taught within the period of training.

This is to enable the students to have a wide view of information technologies and prepare them to be better students for the rest of thier programme in school.
